What is LPG ?

  • LPG is Liquefied Petroleum Gas. Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LPG) are obtained by refining of crude oil and from natural gas by oil absorption or refrigerated absorption process.
  • LP Gases are mixtures of hydrocarbons, which are gaseous at normal ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, but can be liquefied at normal ambient temperature by application of moderate pressure.
  • It is a clean burning, non-poisonous, dependable, high calorific value fuel.
  • LPG is stored and transported in containers as a liquid, but is generally drawn out and used as a gas.
  • LPG in gaseous state is nearly twice as heavy as air. Any leakage of LPG, therefore, tends to settle down at floor level.
  • Liquid LPG is almost half as heavy as water. Thus, when liquid LPG gets converted to a gaseous state, it expands by about 250 times. The leakage of liquid LPG is therefore very dangerous.
  • LPG contains no toxic components such as carbon monoxide and is, therefore, non-poisonous.
  • Fuel gases will burn only when mixed with air in certain proportions. The minimum and maximum concentrations of a fuel gas in a gas / air mixture between which the mixture can be ignited are termed as the over and upper limit of inflammability - The lower flammability limit for LPG is 2% and the higher limit is 8.5%.
  • Pure LPG is colourless and odourless. LPG is distinctively odourised to give warning in case of leakage. Its smell is detectable in air at concentrations down to 1/5th of the lower explosive limit.

What are the uses of LPG?

Lpg can be used for various application such as:

USERS APPLICATIONS
Household Cooking/ Heating / Lighting
Agriculture Grain drying / Weed killing / Preservation of fruits / tobacco curing / Tea drying
Automobile Heat treatment / Paint baking
Ceramics Biscuit & Glost firing of porcelain & stoneware
Chemicals & Drugs Heating & Drying
Electrical Bulbs & Tube lights manufacture / filament manufacture / Battery

What are the advantages of LPG?

The useful characteristics of LPG fired equipment is summarised below:

  • Portability : Cylinders can be transported easily to the location or can be fixed to mobile equipment.
  • Own Storage : Alternate gas suppliers make use of piped delivery system where the customer is affected the moment supply fails. LPG stored in cylinders or bulk installations provide a greater degree of product security.
  • Wide Turn Down : By this is meant the range of gas flow from maximum to minimum for a particular burner. Burners can be designed to operate over wide range.
  • Ease Of Control : Gaseous fuels are the easiest to control and are very quick in response i.e. you can light a fire within seconds of turning the burner knob on. Solid fuels are the slowest.
  • Small Flames : Many processes require a small flame, or a number of small flames rather than a big one. LPG is a good fuel for such applications.
    6. Self-Pressurizing: LPG is stored under moderate pressure and therefore no pumps or gravity system is needed to get the fuel to the burner. Simple LPG burners are quite independent of electrical supply.
  • Consistent Quality : LPG as all petroleum fuels is subject to stringent quality controls and hence it is possible to maintain consistent quality of the product.
  • Clean Combustion : LPG is a high-grade fuel with negligible impurities producing ean sulphur -free combustion gases. This can be important for many processes especially where the gases come into contact with the products.
  • Little Maintenance : Many LPG burners are very simple and require little aintenance. The clean combustion gases ensure long life even for the more complex burners.

Learn how to take care of your stove

Know how to install your gas connection
  • Harsh cleaners can damage the finish. Don't use abrasive powders, highly acidic or alkaline cleansers.
  • Wait for surfaces to cool. If the stove is hot and you try to clean it with a wet cloth, the surface finish may crack.
  • Some foodstuffs can damage the finish. Vinegar, sour milk, citrus fruits juices, tamarind decoctions
  • can all damage the finish. If some such liquid spills on the stove, wipe it off with a dry cloth, wait for the stove to cool, clean with warm soap water and dry.
  • Ordinary stains can be cleaned easily. Some baking soda on a damp cloth does the trick. A mild cleanser may be used for stubborn stains.
  • A chrome finish can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Or any good chrome cleanser.
  • Clean the burner head and mixing tube the right way. Immerse the mixing tube assembly and the burner head completely in a boiling solution of washing soda. Keep it for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly internally and externally. Dry completely to prevent corrosion.
  • The burner holes should be cleaned with a soft wire. The mixing tube can be cleaned with a stiff bottlebrush.
  • Pan supports can be cleaned the same way.

What are things to do when the cylinder is being changed?

  • Put out all fires in the kitchen. This includes diyas, agarbatties, cigarettes and all naked flames; otherwise any leakage of gas could result in fire.
  • Switch off all electrical appliances.
  • Shut the taps on the stove.
  • Have the rubber tube and all the connections checked for leakage with soap solution.
  • Insist that your deliveryman checks cylinder valve and O-ring for any leakage.

Where should the stove be placed?

Know how to install your gas connection
  • At a higher level than the cylinder - about 2 ft to prevent the tube from catching fire.
  • Against a wall to make sure that clothes don't catch fire.
  • Away from curtains.
  • Away from wind draughts to prevent the flame going out and causing leakage of gas.

NOTE: Make sure there are no shelves above the stove REMEMBER THAT YOUR APPLIANCE MUST HAVE AN ISI MARK AND HAVE IT TESTED BY A MECHANIC BEFORE YOU USE IT.

What are the points to remember about the rubber tubing?

Know how to install your gas connection
  • Use  SURAKSHA  LPG hose of approved quality, (ISI mark).
  • It should be as short as possible. Maximum length should be about 1.5 meters.
  • It should be easily accessible for inspection.
  • Keep it away from heat and fire.
  • Ensure it covers the full length of the nozzle of the gas stove.
  • Make sure it does not get heated by the burner, or is looped/twisted.
  • Clean it with wet cloth only. Don't use soap to ease the tube over the nozzle.
  • Check it regularly for cracks, holes, softness, and porosity especially at the ends.
  • Replace Suraksha hose  every 5 years if not earlier.
  • Do not cover Suraksha hose  by any other object or sleeve.

What Is the importance of the Pressure Regulator?

The Pressure Regulator is connected to the outlet of the cylinder valve. Its function is to regulate the pressure of the gas coming out of the cylinder and supply it at a constant pressure to the hot plate.

What are the basic rules of safety?

Please note the following for your safety

  • Always remember to shut the value when the stove is not in use, especially at night.Don't tamper with your cylinder or allied equipment.
  • Make sure all parts of the installation are in good condition. If you find anything wrong with any part, contact your distributor and ask for a mechanic.
  • It is safer to wear cotton clothing while working in the kitchen.Do not use dupatta to handle utensils, preferably use an apron.
  • Keep children away from the installation while you're cooking.
  • Use dry pot holders.
  • Never leave the hotplate on and unattended. The burners could extinguish by overflow of cooking material or even draught of air) allowing gas to leak. The accumulated gas could get ignited by the second burner in operation (or other sources) resulting in fire.
  • Turn pan handles to the side away from the flame. Keep plastic items away from the stoves.
  • 50% of cooking gas-related accidents occur because of leakages from the rubber tube.
  • Get your tube changed, whenever it is damaged. And as a rule, replace the rubber tube every two years.
  • Keep the safety cap on over unused cylinders.
    Use Suraksha LPG Hose.

What to do if you smell gas?

  • Don't Panic.
Turn the pressure regulator knob to the OFF position.
  • Put out all fires in the kitchen (including agarbatti and pooja lamp).
  • Open all doors and windows for ventilation.
  • Do not strike a match and do not operate any electric switches (including main switch). Electrical switches and dry cell torches generate spark while switching on or off.
  • Call the Emergency number or the distributor immediately.

Are you paying for an underweight cylinder?

underweightcylinder
  • Do you know that a domestic cooking gas cylinder contains 14.2 Kg (plus or minus 150 gm) of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)?
  • Now add to that the weight of the empty cylinder (already marked on its body). And you arrive at the correct weight of a filled cooking gas cylinder. Anything less and you are not getting your due.
  • Checks at our end. At BPCL, we have built in a series of checks in the system to ensure that the LPG that reaches you is of the correct weight.
  • First, at our LPG Bottling Plants, the cylinders are filled through a preset weighing mechanism. They are then check-weighed for the correct fill on a check scale.
  • Next, they are fitted with leak-tight safety caps and pilfer-proof seals before they move out of the plant.
  • Finally, all our LPG distributors are instructed to carry out 100% weighing checks to ensure that each and every cylinder is of the correct weight.
  • What should you do? In spite of all there tests, you may still suspect that you are paying for an under weight cylinder, at the time of taking delivery. To put your doubts to rest, all you need to do is to call up your distributor. He will collect your cylinder and get it weighed at his godown, in your presence. And if your cylinder is indeed underweight, we will replace it immediately. At no extra charge.

How to make your LPG last longer?

Organise your cooking

underweightcylinder

Prepare all the ingredients and keep them ready for cooking. This means you can cook rapidly. If you have to stop cooking for a short while shut off the gas. It's cheaper to light another match.

The family that eats together saves gas If you have to heat food just once,it means less waste. Reheated food is also less nutritious.

A gas burner has two positions - use them

underweightcylinder

Once you bring a liquid to boil or the food becomes hot you can keep it hot by using the simmer position hereby saving a lot of gas. Because at the simmer position gas flows out at only 1/4 to 1/3 the full rate. Try it out and see.

The colour and height of the flame are very important

If the flame is blue in colour, everything is fine. If the outlet holes are blocked and the flame is yellow, have the stove checked by a mechanic. The flame should never extend beyond the bottom of the pan. This saves gas and makes sure the food is cooked properly, especially if there is liquid inside the pan or vessel.

What is 'Opt out of Subsidy' and who can contribute ?

We probably do not even realize how fortunate we are to be using LPG over the years and cannot visualize what it is to be without LPG in our kitchens!

Many of us may not know that even after 60 years of intense marketing LPG, only about 64% of India.s population enjoys the benefit of a clean fuel in our homes. This means 36% of our fellow countrymen are deprived of the benefits of a clean fuel and are subjected to a high level of indoor pollution by using polluting fuels for cooking.

In order to reach out to these citizens of the country and save lives that are cut short due to pollution, we need to make LPG available across the country for which the funds are required.

LPG is a highly subsidized commodity in India and the subsidy amount was a whopping Rs. 46,000 crores during 2013-14. Any subsidy provided translates to money out of the exchequer. The same money if not given out as subsidy could be used to make LPG available to those who are today deprived of using it.

We call upon all LPG consumers who can afford to pay the market price for their LPG supply to give up the subsidy entitlement which is to the tune of Rs. 3600/- for 7 cylinders or maximum Rs. 6200/- for 12 cylinders for the whole year and be a part of this nation building exercise. This gesture by us will go a long way to reach clean fuel to every home.

Valuing your involvement and with your permission, we will be happy to display your name on the 'Scroll of Honour' for opting out of Subsidy.

Can PNG Customers keep their LPG Connection?

Piped-Natural-Gas (PNG) consumers are now allowed by Govt. of India to keep one LPG connection in their household for which supply would be at non-subsidised rate.

In view of the same, PNG consumers whose LPG connections have been blocked can now get their LPG connections unblocked by opting for cylinder supply at non-subsidised rate.

In case you are a PNG consumer but your LPG connection is not blocked, you must convert your LPG connection for receiving supplies at non-subsidised rate as per the Government's policy.

Click here to convert your connection to non-subsidized.

Your LPG connection can also be entrusted in our safe custody against which a Special Termination Voucher called 'Safe Custody TV for PNG consumer' will be given to you. The Safe Custody TV is without any restriction on validity and also transferable to any of the family members (Father, Mother, Son, Daughter, Brother, Sister) anywhere in the country.

No charges will be levied for entrusting your LPG connection in our safe custody.

What is Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG (DBTL) scheme ?

Under the scheme, domestic customers are required to pay the market price for the domestic LPG cylinder, and the subsidy amount is transferred directly to customer's bank account linked with Aadhaar. This ensures that the government provides the subsidy benefit directly to the intended beneficiary by crediting the amount into their account.

How to Transfer my connection when I am shifting residence?

You may want to change your registered address as you are shifting to a new address. There are two scenarios for this:-

Change of address within the same city (Same Distributor)

You are required to inform your Bharatgas distributor of your new address, along with proof of residence, so they can update their records and ensure future deliveries are sent to your new location.

Change of residence within the same city (Different Distributor)

If you are relocating within the same city to an area services by another Bharatgas distributor, simply contact your current Bharatgas Distributor to obtain a Transfer Advice (TA) and present the TA to the distributor serving your new area. Your new distributor will provide a fresh Subscription Voucher (SV) with a new consumer number for the updated address.

In this case of a shift of residence within the same city you are not required to surrender your cylinder and regulator. Hence you need to carry your Bharatgas domestic cylinder and pressure regulator to your new residence.

Change of residence to a different City

If you are relocating to a new address in another city, you must return your equipment (cylinders and pressure regulator) to your current Distributor and obtain a Transfer Voucher (TV) along with a refund of the security deposit. Then, visit the nearest LPG Distributor in your new city, submit the TV, and pay the security deposit along with the necessary documents and applicable fees. You will receive a new Subscription Voucher (SV) and the required equipment, including the cylinders and pressure regulator.

I do not require the LPG Connection, can I surrender it?

If you for some reason do not need your LPG connection anymore, you can surrender your connection and obtain a refund of the deposit amount.

Click here to submit your request for surrender of connection.

However your connection will be terminated only after you submit cylinder/s and pressure regulator to your Distributor. Please do not forget to take the refund of the cylinder deposit from your Gas Distributor.

Do I Need KYC?

The LPG control order of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MOPNG) permits one LPG connection in one household. This restriction is because LPG is a subsidised product and unrestricted number of connections may lead to unauthorised use of subsidised LPG.

Accordingly, multiple connections are not allowed in one household. Anyone who has more than one connection should immediately surrender the same.

Oil Marketing Companies undertake identification of multiple connections from time to time and publish the list of suspect cases on their websites.

In case your name/address features in the suspect list but you genuinely do not possess multiple LPG connections, then you are required to submit KYC form along with Proof of identity as well as Proof of Address indicating that the households are different to your distributor.

What is Mandatory Inspection of LPG Connection?

A safety audit of domestic installation is conducted to ensure the safe use of your LPG connection in the kitchen. This inspection should take place once every five years, performed by a trained mechanic from your Bharatgas distributor at your premises. Customer is required to pay a nominal fee, as per the schedule of charges, for which a receipt will be issued. The mechanic will carry an identity card verifying his authorization from your distributor to conduct the audit. If you have any concerns, you can request for his identification or contact your LPG distributorship for verification.

Do I need to buy a hotplate from the LPG distributor only?

Bharatgas distributors offer patented high thermal efficiency gas stoves which consume less LPG compared to other gas stoves available in market. They are available in multiple configurations (2 burner, 3 burner, glass top etc.) at attractive rates. However, it is not mandatory to purchase the gas stove from the Distributors. Customers can choose to buy a BIS-approved stove from any source of their choice. To obtain an LPG connection, customers must have an ISI-marked gas stove and a suraksha rubber tube for the safety of their connection.

If you already have an ISI-marked gas stove, the distributor will inspect it at your premises for a nominal fee (as per schedule of charges). The distributor is required to complete this inspection within 7 days of receiving payment from the customer.

Is there any Expiry Date of Cylinder?

On one of the three vertical stay plates of the LPG cylinder, you will find a date coded alphanumerically, such as A, B, C, or D followed by a two-digit number (e.g., A30). The letter represents the quarter: A for the quarter ending in March (First Quarter), B for June (Second Quarter), C for September (Third Quarter), and D for December (Fourth Quarter). The digits represent the year the cylinder is due for statutory testing. For instance, "A30" means the cylinder is due for statutory testing by March 2030.

It is important to note that this code does not indicate the expiry date of the physical life of the cylinder.

To clarify further, every empty LPG cylinder, when returned from the distributor to the bottling plant for refilling, is inspected for its condition and the due date for statutory testing. Cylinders that require testing are set aside and sent for this process.

Before dispatching to distributors, every filled cylinder undergoes checks to ensure the correct weight and overall safety. Therefore, if a customer receives a cylinder marked "A30" in March 2030, it only indicates that the cylinder is due for testing by the end of March 2030, not that its physical life has expired.
